Finding Joy in the Heat: How Finland Changed My View of Saunas Forever

For most of my life, the word sauna brought to mind a small, stiflingly hot room tucked inside an upscale spa — the kind of place you pop into for a few sweaty minutes between a massage and a facial. Surrounded by wood paneling or glossy tiles, I’d sit there trying to convince myself I was “sweating out toxins,” though truthfully, I never left feeling particularly different. A sauna was more of a filler activity than a ritual.

That all changed when I traveled to Finland.

Here, saunas aren’t some occasional indulgence reserved for spa-goers. They’re a way of life. With about 3 million saunas in a country of just 5.5 million people, these heated sanctuaries are woven into the daily rhythm of Finnish culture. They’re places of connection, restoration, and even spiritual grounding. As one old Finnish saying goes, “The sauna is the poor man’s pharmacy.”

More Than Just Heat

In Finland, a sauna is not about luxury — it’s about wellness. Locals will tell you it’s as natural as brushing your teeth or brewing coffee. Families gather in them, friends catch up inside them, and even business deals are sometimes discussed there. It’s where bodies are warmed and minds are cleared.

And the benefits aren’t just cultural. Regular sauna bathing is linked to reduced stress, better sleep, improved circulation, and soothing relief for sore muscles. In a country that has been ranked the happiest in the world for eight years running, you start to wonder if the ritual of sauna bathing plays a quiet yet powerful role in sustaining that collective joy.

A Journey Into Stillness

When I finally stepped into a Finnish sauna, I immediately noticed the difference from my past spa experiences. There was no pretension, no sense of rushing through. The atmosphere was grounded and communal. The air, while hot, felt somehow softer — almost like an embrace instead of an assault.

After a few minutes, the chatter in my head began to quiet. My breath slowed. My muscles unclenched. And when I eventually stepped out into the crisp air, the contrast was electrifying — as though every cell in my body had awakened. For the first time, I felt what people had always tried to describe: the calm, the clarity, the glow.

It wasn’t just about sweating. It was about releasing.

Why Finland Does It Best

What makes the Finnish approach so unique is the way it blends simplicity with ritual. There’s no elaborate instruction manual — just heat, water, and presence. Some add bursts of steam by tossing water on hot stones. Others cool down by plunging into icy lakes or rolling in the snow, before returning for another round of warmth. The rhythm is elemental, a dance between extremes that leaves you more grounded than you could imagine.

Even airlines are catching onto the appeal. With Finnair offering nonstop flights to Helsinki from cities like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, and Seattle, experiencing authentic sauna culture is more accessible than ever. And it’s worth the journey: stepping into a Finnish sauna is stepping into a centuries-old tradition that feels just as relevant today as it must have hundreds of years ago.

A New Perspective on Wellness

My Finnish vacation completely reframed how I see saunas — and honestly, how I see self-care. No longer do I view them as a spa add-on or a “detox gimmick.” Instead, I see them as a practice: one that balances body and mind, fosters connection, and invites stillness in a world that rarely slows down.

Now, whenever I encounter a sauna, I bring with me what I learned in Finland. I approach it with intention, carving out time to let the heat soften not just my muscles but my thoughts. I linger, I breathe, I release. And I leave feeling more present than I ever did walking out of a luxury spa.

The Takeaway

Sometimes it takes leaving your routine to discover the beauty of someone else’s. For me, Finland’s sauna culture was that revelation. What I once dismissed as a perfunctory wellness step is now a ritual I cherish — one that reminds me that joy, calm, and even health can be found in something as simple as sitting still in the heat.

It turns out, the Finns have it right: the sauna really is a kind of pharmacy. Only instead of pills or prescriptions, the medicine is warmth, time, and presence. And once you’ve experienced it the Finnish way, you’ll never think of a spa day — or a sauna — the same again.
